When To Stay Home Sick

Young adult sick in bed

Sometimes it's not always easy to decide if that winter virus should keep you home from school (or work).

Nurse Coleman has provided the HHS community with this handy reference so you know the signs for when you should stay home.

We want everyone to stay warm and stay healthy, but if you do get a cold or flu, get better soon!

Grade 10 Physical Exams and Other Health Notes

Grade 10 Students Physical Examinations

Physical exams are required by Massachusetts Law, (M.G.L. Chapter 71, Section 57). During the high school years, a physical is required for Grade 10 students. These examinations may be conducted within the school year or within 6 months before (March) entry to Grade 10 with the results on file by June 1 of the 10th grade year. For the class of 2019, a physical performed between March 1, 2016 and June 1, 2017 is acceptable. If your student has had a recent physical exam, please send a copy to the HHS Nurse.

Athletes Physical Exams

MIAA (MA Interscholastic Athletic Association) and HHS Policy requires a current physical exam on file in order to tryout, or participate in HHS athletics. Students may turn in current physicals to their school nurse. Please check your student-athletes’ physical exam date and make appointments as necessary. Physical exams expire 395 days from the date of exam. Registration for winter sports will be posted soon.

Dismissals from School Due to Illness

Any student who becomes ill or suffers an injury during the school day must report to the school nurse. Following assessment by the nurse the parent/guardian will be contacted if necessary. Students being dismissed for illness/injury must be dismissed through the nurse’s office.

Medications During the School Day

According to MA state law and HPS policy any medication (including over the counter medications) taken by students during the school must be administered by the school nurse and must have a written licensed prescriber’s order and written parental consent. After school activities are considered an extension of the school day (e.g. athletics, drama, clubs etc.).

Students may carry and self-administer emergency epinephrine auto–injectors and asthma inhalers with proper documentation on file. Emergency Health Care Plans must be on file for students requiring emergency epinephrine. Students with Life-Threatening Allergies may not attend field trips without a current, completed Emergency Health Care Plan on file.
