Chromebook Program 2019-2020
Note: The 2019-2020 school year marks the end of the former "BYOD" program at HHS. All students should plan on using their school-owned Chromebook in their classes. Personally-owned laptops and Chromebooks are not an appropriate substitute, unless needed for a special project.
Grade 9
HHS will provide a Chromebook device to all students in Grade 9. There is no annual fee for this Chromebook; however, we strongly recommend that families purchase the optional insurance plan for $40*, which protects against accidental damage.Chromebooks for freshmen will be ready for pickup at the 9th Grade Orientation event on Wednesday, August 21. Students not attending the Orientation should pick up their Chromebooks on the first day of school in the school library, beginning at 7 am.
Grades 10-12
HHS will provide a Chromebook device to all students in Grades 10-12. There is no annual fee for the Chromebook; however, we strongly recommend that families purchase the optional insurance plan for $40*, which protects against accidental damage.Returning students should bring their Chromebook to school fully charged on the first day of school. Students who are new to Holliston High can pick up their Chromebooks and Technology Welcome Packets in the school library on the first day of school, beginning at 7am.
Form Due Dates
Sign-off forms are no longer required in order to receive a Chromebook. Relevant "care and use" information will be provided as part of the back-to-school online updates.
However, families participating in the Chromebook Insurance Program should submit their form and check to the main office on or before the first day of school.
*Students who are eligible for free or reduced lunch may waive the $40 insurance fee.

Chromebook Insurance Renewal
Current HHS students in Grades 9-11 who will be attending Holliston High next year can keep their Chromebooks with them for use over the summer. Students may find this useful for a number of different digital activities, including AP summer work, research into colleges and post-secondary programs, communication with peers and teachers, and continuing to develop their 21st-century skills.
Current Grade 8 students who will be attending HHS in the fall will receive information over the summer about receiving their Chromebooks at Freshman Orientation.
Holliston Public Schools highly recommends that families purchase the optional Chromebook Insurance. The current plan expires on the last day of school, June 18, 2019. For safety and peace-of-mind, we recommend that families renew their insurance before then, to cover accidental damage that may occur to the Chromebooks over the summer and 2019-2020 school year.
To renew or begin Chromebook Insurance, please return the Chromebook Insurance Form and a check to the Holliston High School Main Office before the end of the school year. The new coverage will cover Summer 2019 and the 2019-2020 school year, beginning on the day the insurance form and check are turned in.
Note: In past years, there was also an additional form, sometimes called the Chromebook Loan Agreement form. Last fall, in order to help reduce paperwork, the Chromebook Loan Agreement form was made a part of the annual start-of-school forms that are signed digitally in PowerSchool. You will see a Chromebook consent question, along with the Student-Parent Handbook sign-off question and other routine questions and forms, mid-summer in time for the start of the new school year. The only paper form needed at this time is the recommended Chromebook Insurance form, due by the last day of school, in order to maintain insurance coverage over the summer months.
If you know that your student will not be returning to Holliston High School next year, please have them turn in their Chromebook to the HHS Library during final exams.
Thank you for your continued support of our technology program, as we work to provide equitable access to digital resources for all of our students.

Chromebooks and BYOD for 2017-2018 School Year
Holliston High is excited to begin Stage 2 of our one-to-one Chromebook program. Chromebooks are low-cost, cloud-centric laptops that allow students and teachers to participate in collaborative, interactive, digital learning experiences. We have seen tremendous success with our Chromebook program during the first year, and are looking forward to expanding the program in 2017-2018.
Grade 9
HHS will provide a Chromebook device to all students in Grade 9. There is no annual fee for this Chromebook; however, we strongly recommend that families purchase the optional insurance plan for $40*, which protects against accidental damage. Chromebooks for freshmen will be ready for pickup at the 9th Grade Orientation event on Wednesday, August 23rd, providing that the Chromebook Insurance/Waiver Form is turned in by the deadline. Otherwise, Chromebooks will be available during the first week of school once the form is completed and turned in.
Every Grade 9 student is required to complete and return a Chromebook Insurance/Waiver form to HHS by Wednesday, August 16th.
Grade 10
HHS will provide a Chromebook device to all students in Grade 10. Whenever possible, students will receive the same Chromebook that they returned in the spring. There is no annual fee for the Chromebook; however, we strongly recommend that families purchase the optional insurance plan for $40*, which protects against accidental damage. Chromebooks for sophomores will be ready for pickup in Advisory on the first day of school.
Every Grade 10 student is required to complete and return a Chromebook Insurance/Waiver form to HHS by Wednesday, August 23rd. Sophomores who do not submit their form by the due date may not receive their Chromebook on the first day of school.
Grade 11
Juniors will continue to have the option to “opt out” of Chromebook use. Whenever possible, students who “opted in” last year and were issued Chromebooks in 2016-2017 will receive the same Chromebook that they returned in the spring. For families who chose to opt out last year, we will extend your “opt out” decision and previously signed paperwork again this year. However, if you have changed your mind and would like to “opt in”, you can request to be issued a Chromebook from the limited supply that we have left (first-come, first-served). There is no annual fee for the Chromebook; however, we strongly recommend that families purchase the optional insurance plan for $40*, which protects against accidental damage. Chromebooks for juniors will be ready for pickup in Advisory on the first day of school.
For 11th Graders Only: Only those 11th Grade students requesting Chromebooks are required to complete and return a Chromebook Insurance/Waiver form to HHS by Wednesday, August 23rd, in order to have the Chromebook ready and available for the first day of school.
Note on the “opt out” program: Juniors who chose to opt out last year and are continuing to choose to opt out this year do not need to complete a form. However, these students and families must understand that choosing to opt out reflects an agreement to bring a laptop (not a smartphone or tablet) to school everyday. If this is not possible, please consider requesting a Chromebook instead.
Grade 12
Seniors will continue the BYOD program, and will be expected to bring their own personal laptop to school everyday. Seniors who borrowed Chromebooks as Juniors in 2016-2017 may request the same Chromebook again for 2017-2018. Students without a personal laptop to bring can request a Chromebook from the limited supply that we have left (first-come, first-served). There is no annual fee for the Chromebook; however, we strongly recommend that families purchase the optional insurance plan for $40*, which protects against accidental damage. Chromebooks for seniors will be ready for pickup in the library during the first week of school.
Seniors requesting Chromebooks must complete and return a Chromebook Insurance/Waiver form to HHS by Wednesday, August 23rd, in order to have the Chromebook ready and available for the first day of school.

Chromebook Pickup Info (Grades 9 & 10)
During the Holliston Town Meeting in May, voters approved funding for the purchase of Chromebooks for two grades of students at Holliston High School. This means we are gearing up to issue a Chromebook to each 9th and 10th grader (Classes of 2019 and 2020) at the start of the 2016-2017 school year.
This funding allows us to begin a transition from a “Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)” model to a more coordinated “One-to-One (1:1)” program. Although BYOD has served us well as a first step toward technology integration at HHS, the transition to a 1:1 Chromebook program gives our school the chance to take the next important steps, providing better equity and consistency in the technology available to students, and additional opportunities for students to engage in authentic learning that strengthens their creativity, communication, collaboration and critical thinking.
The HHS Chromebook program will be very similar to the program already running at Adams Middle School. Students will receive a school issued Chromebook for use during the school year.
Update 8/19/16: We recognize that the transition for 10th graders is more challenging given that they began their high school careers with BYOD. Therefore, for the 2016-2017 school year, 10th grade families will have the option to opt-out of the 1:1 Chromebook Program providing that students’ personally owned devices meet the same technical requirements, are brought to school each day, and are equipped with any necessary applications teachers or courses may require to access the curriculum. If a family is choosing to opt-out of the 1:1 Chromebook Program for the 2016-2017 school year, please return the completed Holliston High School opt-out form, due Friday August 26th, after reading the requirements outlined in this email.
