Student Feature Friday: Will Flanagan

This week’s Student Feature Friday is senior Will Flanagan. Five minutes into our conversation it was hard not to be impressed by his maturity, genuine desire to improve his community and his love of learning. Will is currently the senior class president, athletic captain, club president, Eagle Scout, swim instructor and all around great person. Yet with all of these accomplishments he remains humble and ready to serve his community. Through tennis, which he describes as being introduced to by his grandfather when he “started walking”, gymnastics, and diving on the swim team he fulfills his need to be active and sees his constant improvement as incredibly rewarding. WIll’s academic focus is met through his rigorous courses, participation in Model United Nations and his membership in NHS.

Although his academic and athletic accomplishments are impressive, it is his drive to help others through community service that sets him apart. Will just completed his Eagle Scout project which focused on renovating the garage of a group home for autistic adults and turning it into a multipurpose room. To read more about Will visit the Student Feature Friday section of the Principal's blog.

Student Feature Friday: Jack Garvey

Our first Student Feature Friday this year is sophomore Jack Garvey and I could not think of a better student to start of the year. Multiple people recommended Jack for this segment and after spending a few minutes chatting with him, the reasons for the recommendation are clear. Jack is mature, thoughtful and kind and is already a role model for his peers. He spoke of two main passions: sports and working with Best Buddies. For more information about Jack, visit the Student Feature Friday section of the Principal's blog.

Chromebook Program for 2018-2019

Holliston High is excited to begin Stage 3 of our one-to-one Chromebook program. Chromebooks are low-cost, cloud-centric laptops that allow students and teachers to participate in collaborative, interactive, digital learning experiences. We have seen tremendous success with our Chromebook program during the first two years, and are looking forward to expanding the program in 2018-2019.

Grade 9

HHS will provide a Chromebook device to all students in Grade 9. There is no annual fee for this Chromebook; however, we strongly recommend that families purchase the optional insurance plan for $40*, which protects against accidental damage.

Chromebooks for freshmen will be ready for pickup at the 9th Grade Orientation event on Wednesday, August 22nd. Students not attending the Orientation should pick up their Chromebooks on the first day of school in the school library.

Grades 10 & 11

HHS will provide a Chromebook device to all students in Grades 10 & 11. There is no annual fee for the Chromebook; however, we strongly recommend that families purchase the optional insurance plan for $40*, which protects against accidental damage.

Returning students should bring their Chromebook to school fully charged on the first day of school. Students who are new to Holliston High can pick up their Chromebooks and Technology Welcome Packets in the school library on the first day of school.

Grade 12

Seniors who opted-in and were issued school Chromebooks in 2017-2018 may continue to use them in the upcoming school year. Students who are new to Holliston High are also eligible for a Chromebook. There is no annual fee for the Chromebook; however, we strongly recommend that families purchase the optional insurance plan for $40*, which protects against accidental damage.

The Class of 2019 will continue to have the option to “opt out” of Chromebook use, provided that they bring their own laptop device instead. Seniors who would like to "opt back in" should contact the HHS main office to be placed on a waiting list, until availability can be assessed in early September.

All seniors should plan to bring their charged Chromebook or personal laptop to school on the first day.

Form Due Dates

New in 2018-2019: Sign-off forms are no longer required in order to receive a Chromebook. Relevant "care and use" information will be provided as part of the back-to-school online updates.

However, families participating in the Chromebook Insurance Program should submit their form and check to the main office on or before the first day of school.

*Students who are eligible for free or reduced lunch may waive the $40 insurance fee.

Thank you for your help in making our technology program successful and valuable for our students.

Holliston Freshman Working Toward Strengthening Support for Food Pantries

Most people are happy to donate to food pantries and drop necessary items but except for an annual food drive, they are really not aware of shortages of certain items at their local pantries. So how about if they received a fortnightly or a monthly email with the list of items needed? Given that food pantries are run by volunteers, they do not have the personnel to send out such emails on a regular basis. Some food pantries do have a website that lists their inventories but do people actually go and check the website before their next shopping list? Holliston High School freshman, Akshara Shankar, is on a mission to find some solutions.

Akshara has been working on her project, ‘ManyHands’ with the support of the MIT Leadership Training Institute’s mentorship program. Akshara has worked to design the website, contacted over 20 food pantries of which 11 have already registered on her site including the Holliston Pantry Shelf. She has received lists of the most essential items and is now working to get the community to sign up on her website to receive alerts about items required by food pantries. Holliston High School students, parents and teachers who would like to receive alerts about what your local pantry needs can sign up on www.manyhandsfoodpantry.com
